Mr Good Says:

(Loaf is Temporarily Closed)

My son attends 1 hour lessons in Bukit Timah Shopping Centre; while waiting for him, I discovered Loaf on the basement level. The upper levels in this mall of the yesteryear are mainly occupied by maid agencies while food stalls and learning centers congregate in the basement levels. Among the dimly lit and aged eating houses, this cozy little cafe looks like an oasis in a desert, inviting me in.

Laksa

I only had drinks the first time but made a point to return for laksa after I saw someone having it on the next table. And it turns out that the laksa tastes as good as it looks. Served piping hot in a vintage enamel bowl placed atop a cork coaster, the bowl of laksa screams old school, earning it brownie points before I even started eating. Another plus point is the fried-upon-order tau kee. Freshly fried tau kee is just to die for!

The laksa gravy is also suitably rich and flavourful but not overly so. The spice level is just low enough to suit the masses yet still satisfying. As a reference, my 3yo son who takes mild spice could eat the laksa noodles though he promptly finished his whole bottle of water to neutralize the spice. The only drawback of this laksa is the lack of cockles and that can be a deal breaker for some. Not for me though, because I don't take hum.

Chicken Katsu

If laksa is not your thing, you can consider their Chicken Katsu rice (this is the special of the day almost all the time). It consists of battered chicken thigh served with pineapples, mushrooms, cucumbers, onsen egg and miso soup in a cup. I like that the fried chicken is not greasy and has a decent meat to batter ratio despite the cutlet being on the thinner side. Serving fried food with pineapples is also brilliant because it imparts a sweet and tart flavour to the meat, making it more appetizing. Consequently, the meal is also less jelat.
