Ms Teatime Says:
I have always been a fan of eclairs, even if they are just simple ones found at neighborhood bakeries. You know those with custard cream wrapped in a soft and thin pastry glazed with cheap chocolate? So when I heard about L’éclair by Sarah Michelle, an eclair specialty cafe, I was tempted to check it out.

While located in town, L’éclair is situated a little off the beaten track, a short walk away from the popular Orchard Road shopping belt. In exchange, guests are treated to a less crowded space with some greenery view. I like the overall ambiance, which exudes class without being too intimidating.
Although the setup looks fancy and each regular eclair costs a whopping S$7.50 to S$8.50 (compared to S$3 at neighborhood bakeries), the upmarket feels are made less daunting by the smiley and friendly servers, free ice water (self serve basis) and Nett prices (no service charge).

After tasting the eclairs, I could understand why I am paying more for them. The use of fresh and quality ingredients is apparent since the eclairs do not taste artificial or overly sweet (to me sugar is often excessively used to mask the lack of real food flavours). Choux pastry, though not very crisp, has good bite and is not soft and soggy like the cheaper ones. In addition, the beautiful handcrafted eclairs are considerably big (13 cm in length) and very generously filled.
Apart from the typical chocolate eclair, there are also at least 9 other flavours on offer each day. From the Classics (Salted Caramel/Vanilla/Hazelnut) to Best Sellers (Ispahan/Banana) to Seasonal Ones (Pistachio/Earl Grey/Mango & Passionfruit/Jivara Milk Chocolate), I was so spoilt for choice!
While I was there, I also noticed other tables enjoying a 3-tiered High Tea Degustation Set (which includes mini eclairs, savoury canapes and 2 drinks). I am likely to return for this. If you are keen, do note that pre-order is required.
