Bloggers = Influencers?

By Denise Chua | February 24, 2017

Bloggers and Influencers- are they the same? Or are they not?

The answer is maybe.

By definition, a blogger is someone who publishes content online on a web log (blog) while an influencer is someone who can influence the behaviors, opinions and/or actions (often purchase actions) of others.

I think that a blogger is someone who expresses opinions about products, issues or brands so readers read a blog for the blogger's reviews; an influencer is someone who persuades another to try out a product or brand so readers follow an influencer for the influencer's recommendations (or what to avoid). In short, I see a blogger as a reviewer and an influencer as an advertiser.

A blogger can also be an influencer and vice versa if what he/she writes on his/her blog can impact your sentiment about certain products, issues or brands.

But an influencer can also be a non-blogger because he/she can sway you on social media platforms (for example Instagram, Facebook or Twitter) or on traditional media, without ever owning a blog.

So am I a blogger? Yes. Am I an influencer? Well, I am working towards it.
