Ms Teatime Says:
The first time I visited May's Kafe was in January 2016, soon after Beauty World MRT Station opened. Mr MRT was on a mission to find cafes with Free WiFi near all the MRT stations in Singapore and I followed him on his quest.
While we didn't find any Free WiFi here, we still added May's Kafe to our favourites' list because of Dan Zi! We were intrigued by the name and that curiosity led us to discover a simple but ingenious dish- a soft boiled egg sitting prettily on top of a slice of thick toast.

I was used to dipping Ya Kun's crispy toast into their perfectly cooked soft boiled eggs so this combination of toast and half boiled egg was not new to me, but May's Kafe's presentation is definitely more novel and beautiful! Don't you just love good looking food?
Also, it surprised me that another shop, other than Ya Kun, could also serve perfect soft boiled eggs that I need not crack open by myself. It may seem trivial now, but at that time, not as many shops crack open soft boiled eggs for you as now; sometimes we even have to make do with under or over cooked half boiled eggs. Couple that with their aromatic local coffee, I took an immediate liking to May's Kafe and made it my frequent haunt.

Over the years, May's Kafe has been constantly improving- adding more variety via food items like Sourdough with Honey Butter and Bulgogi Chicken Rice Bowl, upgrading recipes (their laksa gravy used to be a tad sour but now it is more spicy and savory, which tastes better) and adopting electronic payment methods to keep up with the times.

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic where diners prefer to minimise contact, May's Kafe also offers the option of contactless online order in their cafe.
(1) Seat yourself
(2) Scan the Grab Order QR code on your table
(3) Order and Pay Online (Skip the queue!)
(4) Wait for order to be served to your table
This does come at a slight premium (about 30 cents more per food item) but you can consider this as a form of table service with service charge when you are in the mood for it or when you have a kid in tow and queueing up is too much of a hassle.
Staff here are efficient and polite. They aren't particularly warm but you shouldn't feel unwelcomed either. However, for a brief period last year, I was slightly apprehensive towards their plate collection aunty.
My son started attending a preschool near May's Kafe so I became a super regular here. As I spent longer periods here idling while waiting to pick him, I noticed her. She is a straightforward lady who will not hesitate to ask smaller groups to take smaller tables. But if you can't find a seat, she'll help you. The thing is, she clears used plates and cups very very promptly, which makes me wonder if she is trying to "chase" me away to make way for new customers? So I always left one mouthful of drink on purpose to keep my "right" to sit.
As time passed, I observed that she is this efficient regardless of the crowd. Then one day as she was keeping my empty cup, she told me smilingly, "You can continue to sit since there are many seats. We will not chase you away. But remember to mask up!". It then dawned on me that she could be clearing so fast because she wants to keep the saliva laden stuff away as quickly as possible. And to use the chance to remind diners who are done eating to put on their masks so that they will minimise the spread of saliva and germs as they continue to sit and chat. (After reading my comment, their boss told me that clearing plates fast was for hygiene purposes, because leftover food tend to attract flies.) This actually makes me feel more at ease to visit May's Kafe during this pandemic. Now, she is my favourite staff here.
With its constant effort, May's Kafe has expanded its seating area and added a new outlet at The Bencoolen. If you are nearby, pop by to support this local cafe!
